Finally doing my homework, the structure being used for the TV series, the Chief Joseph Ranch, is actually located near Darby, Montana, in the Bitterroot Valley. It was built by a firm of architects from Ohio in 1917, and parts of the structure have been recently added.

Robert Reamer built a similar ranch complex called Green Meadows north of Helena for Huntly Child (Yellowstone Association) in 1914-15, but the main house burned at some point, and the barn, which resembled the Darby structure, burned in 1956. During some of the years he was building in Yellowstone Park, Reamer also lived in Ohio, but didn't work for the same firm that built the Chief Joseph Ranch.

Famous architect Frank Lloyd Wright also built a number of projects in the Bitterroot Valley, but very few of them survive today. However, his one Livingston, Montana, house was owned by Margot Kidder, who recently passed away.
