Paul,
There is a herd of mountain goats that lives up high near the summit of Sepulcher Mountain. I have seen several of them every time I have hiked the mountain, and that dates back to the 1990s. It would be a short trek (by mountain goat standards) for mom and baby to saunter down Sepulcher and take any of a number of routes from the bottom to the Golden Gate area.
There are also mountain goats in/on several of the Southern Gallatin Mountains south of Sepulcher, particularly Bannock Peak. I have seen them on Bannock on several occasions while hiking Bighorn Pass.
I have heard 2nd and 3rd hand reports of people seeing mountain goats on several other peaks in that area, including Mt. Holmes, but I have never seen goats on Holmes on any of my 3 hikes to the summit or my hike to Trilobite Lake.
