46er,
I had the pleasure of getting to know Katy when I was doing the seasonal interp ranger gig. She played a significant role in the seasonal interpretive training that I attended for several consecutive years. My ex and I ran into Katy and Patrick one evening as we were sharing the Yellowstone River Picnic Area trail, years ago. They were out birding, and told us they had seen a peregrine falcon. That was before the park ornithologist or anyone else that I am aware of discovered the new nest beneath the columnar basalt above the Yellowstone River, across from Calcite Springs Overlook, and slightly upriver.
Katy, while retired from the NPS, is still active as a volunteer, including organizing the annual activity around raptor migration. She does a preparatory lecture, usually at the Fishing Bridge Visitor Center, and then leads a procession north to Hayden Valley for a lengthy viewing session. I occasionally see news of other activities she is leading, particularly around West Yellowstone and the Madison area. I suspect she may either live over around West Yellowstone, or at least, summer in that area.
She is a joy, and has a wonderful ethic of sharing her enthusiasm for nature with others.
