Welllllllll, a few days turned into quite a few days! It started with a beer-swilling friend who is doing surgical rotations in Anchorage spending his last free day with me checking out Fur Rondy in Anchorage, including beer sampling, carnival rides, and the snow carving entries. Then I had to shovel more snow, which led to HAVING to ski the groomed trails that surround us on 2 sides. Then I made a trip to the NPS Alaska Regional Office in Anchorage only to find out you can't gain access to the building unless you are invited, so I had to generate a crafty email designed to get me through the door.

Finally, the second chapter of "Close Encounters of the Furry Kind" is out there for all to see. It is titled "What's a nice bear like you doing in a place like this?"

The story revolves around the roadside craziness I found on my very first visit to Yellowstone in 1967, when bears were panhandling all over the place. There is a section on the history of bear management in Yellowstone, along with lots of historic photos, courtesy of the NPS photo files.

Baby Boomers should enjoy this one!
