Every time I've been up there, the structure has been occupied. For many years, an older fellow, named George, did the lookout work. We were told he was a sucker for Oreo's, but he didn't seem to get all that excited when we brought him some. George had gotten into making fancy fishing rods as a hobby.
I haven't been up there for maybe 6 or 7 years, but I suspect the lookout post is still staffed.
There is a radio repeater on Mt. Holmes, and occasionally, the Radio Shop in Mammoth will send a technician up on a helicopter to do maintenance on it.
The views from both Holmes and Sheridan are very impressive, well worth the effort it takes to get up there.
