For certain Alaskans, running a 22.5 mile race that includes a steep ascent up a mountainside to where glaciers hang out, crossing a river loaded with glacial meltwater, and dodging devils club and cow parsnip seems like a "good time". As the linked article details, this year's race featured a number of additional challenges: bees, bears, and moose.

There is a commonality to those who finish at or near the top in this race. Many also finish at or near the top in the infamous 4th of July race up and down Mt. Marathon near Seward. More contrasting, many of these top performers are also world class nordic skiers. The psychologist in me wonders where these folks would score on a masochism scale, if we just had one.
