Paul,

Those of us who ski the Upper Terrace Loop get to experience several places with the anomaly you reference. There is a similar one just past the subject parking lot as you approach the steep uphill. Nothing like skis to demonstrate the finer points of gravity.

Even those who simply walk the loop via snowshoes get to share in seeing steam, or in many cases, simply dry pavement, "give away" little hot spots that are not apparent in the summer.

Those who do not want to snowshoe can simply walk between the parking lot on the Grand Loop Road and both Canary Spring and the large parking lot above Main Terrace. I highly recommend the experience to anyone lucky enough to be in Mammoth in the winter.
