46er,

That trailer got me excited. I grew up in the shadow of the Catskills. As I remember it, we were blessed with one peak over 4,000 feet, Slide Mountain. My backpacking career commenced in that area at the age of 12. After moving to Colorado at the age of 16, I found myself trying to "educate" some of my new peers about the non-urban parts of New York. We were doing some serious steep vertical (did the Wittenberg, Cornell, Slide trip several times) in those heavily glaciated steep-sided mountains under more heat and humidity than I ever experienced in the Colorado Rockies. The business of coping with the thin air at 10, 11, or even 12,000 feet in Colorado was the most striking difference I experienced, even though seeing copious snow on mountaintops in the summer was also contrasty.

I only made it to the Adirondacks a couple times, visiting a friend's family's closed youth camp on Paradox Lake. We spent all our time paddling around and swimming in the lake.

I continue to be amazed at how much wilderness got preserved in New York State how long ago, and I am certainly appreciative of it.
