The participants would drag one or more skulls behind them by means of leather ropes attached to skewers piercing their backs and chests. They would also be hoisted off the ground by these same skewers and the skulls again would be used to add weight to hasten the skewers ripping loose. The dancers were obligated to continue dancing or hanging until the skewers tore free. Catlin has paintings/illustrations of these rituals too.
